Indians tweeting for oxygen

More info

The latest wave of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting India has caused heart-breaking shortages of essential medical equipment across the country. As hospitals run out of beds and basic supplies like oxygen, citizens are turning to sites like Twitter and Instagram to source medicines, exchange knowledge and hold the government accountable. Ananya Bhattacharya from Quartz India explains how social media has influenced the response to the pandemic.

Illegal Brick Kilns in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, the brick making industry provides thousands of jobs and supports the country’s rapid industrialisation – but the kilns used to make the bricks can be heavily polluting. Laws aim to mitigate the environmental and health impacts, but many brick factories have not implemented these changes. Dr Nina Brooks and her research team at Stanford University have developed an AI model that uses satellite imagery to identify which kilns are operating illegally, and hope that it can be used to encourage more factories to abide by the law.

EU and AI regulation

This week the EU Commission published proposals to ban “AI systems considered a clear threat to the safety, livelihoods, and rights of people” and to increase the legal regulations of biometric data, such as facial recognition software. Technology journalist and independent researcher Dr. Stephanie Hare joins the show live to explain the proposals and their likely impacts in Europe and across the world.

Digital Therapeutics Podcast with Eugene Borukhovich

Ep18 Improving Outcomes for IBS and IBD Sufferers Through Light Touch Digital Therapy

More info

As a former IBS sufferer, Elena Mustatea knows all too well that our standard model of healthcare does not adequately treat or support people with chronic conditions—especially digestive conditions. Elena eventually took matters into her own hands and attended a detox retreat in Thailand, which restored her physical and mental well-being and gave her the idea to start Bold Health.

Bold Health is clinically validated and science-backed, and relieves the painful, life-disrupting symptoms of chronic digestive conditions through cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation exercises. This intervention is crucial, because as Elena points out, 75% of the population suffers from GI symptoms in any given week, and 30% of the population has a diagnosable, long-term digestive condition. Digestive and autoimmune conditions are an enormous mental health burden and disproportionately affect women.

Eugene and Elena talk about Elena’s journey from consulting and venture capital to digital therapeutics, Bold Health’s recent RCT results, and Elena’s view on how digital therapeutics and pharma could work together in the future.

Dr. Priscilla Janice Marbell Empowers People to Take Charge of Their Health

More info

Today’s guest is passionate about empowering people to take better charge of their health.

In this episode, Laurence Girard, CEO of Fruit Street Health, talks with Dr. Priscilla Janice Marbell. A medical doctor, certified health educator, and certified health coach, Priscilla has worked for Fruit Street Health’s Digital Diabetes Prevention and Weight Loss Program for two years as a lifestyle coach.

In this episode, Priscilla and Laurence discuss:

* The importance of diabetes self management programs and chronic disease self management programs, and how you can’t expect your healthcare provider to do everything for you.

* How some people who join in-person diabetes prevention programs simply fail to turn up to sessions.

* Priscilla reads an encouraging message she received from someone who recently graduated from Fruit Street’s virtual diabetes prevention program: “It's not easy to change habits and to stick to them. I'm hopeful, though, and I can't thank you enough for the support and push to keep going. I know it's a job, but you've made it genuine. And I'm glad you’re my coach.”

* How each person’s health journey is unique to them. For example, some people use the Sharecare Health & Well-being app and also use calorie-counting apps. Another example is that some people insist on weighing themselves every day, while others only want to weigh themselves once a week.

* The sense of community and emotional support that participants in group diabetes prevention programs feel. For instance, many participants really love the Fitbit challenges. (Fitbit are physical activity trackers that are worn on your body, like a watch or a clip. Fitbit challenges are ways people can “compete” against other people. Examples include: Who can do the most steps today? How many participants can reach their daily step goal?)

EP08 Adherence and Engagement with Digital Interventions

More info

Ina’s background has been in e-mental health, and she is very passionate about improving adherence of interventions.

Engagement and adherence have become buzzwords but what do they actually mean in medical terms and what is the difference? While adherence refers to a patient following a treatment plan, engagement takes it a step further and implies actions, such as reading materials or taking actions to try to change behaviours. Our guest speakers explain what both terms mean in terms of digital mental health platforms and solutions and why it is so important to understand the concept of engagement.

About our Guest:

Dr. Douglas Jackson serves as the President/CEO of Project C.U.R.E. Each week, Project C.U.R.E. delivers approximately four semi-truck loads of donated medical supplies and equipment to desperately needy people around the world. In addition to delivering nearly 200 forty-foot containers each year through the C.U.R.E. Cargo program, the C.U.R.E. Clinics program sends teams of medical professionals to assist partner hospitals and clinics. Project C.U.R.E. also provides hundreds of hours of training through the Helping Babies Breathe and Helping Mothers Survive curriculum. Thousands of dollars of medical supplies are carried by traveling doctors and nurses in the form of C.U.R.E. Kits. More than 25,000 people volunteer with Project C.U.R.E. every year, making the organization one of the most efficient and effective grass-roots organizations in the country.

Empowering People with Diabetes: How Digital Tools Can Eliminate Weight Stigma

More info

In this episode, Laurence talks with Katie, a coach for Fruit Street Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program.

A registered dietitian and a certified diabetes educator, Katie received her bachelor's degree in nutrition from Montana State University and her master's degree in human nutrition from Arizona State University.

Discussed in this episode:

* Katie explores how participants of in-person diabetes prevention programs dislike being weighed in front of another person—even if that person is a registered dietician. These discomforts and anxieties, Katie explains, can sometimes be lessened when participants in digital diabetes prevention programs use smart scales.

* The pros and cons of someone committed to weight loss weighing themself daily versus weighing themself weekly.

* One-on-one dietician counseling compared to counseling via a support group. And how group sessions can help alleviate burn-out for healthcare professionals (who can interact with, say, thirty people in a group in a much more timely matter compared to interacting with thirty people in one-on-one consults).

* Empowering people with diabetes.
